The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game where players place bets and form hands with cards. It’s a game of chance, but it also requires skill and psychology.

In most games, players must put in a forced bet (called an ante or blind) before they get their 2 cards. The dealer then shuffles and deals each player (or the players in his position) one card at a time, beginning with the player on their left. Players then place their bets into a central pot. If they have a good hand, they can “raise” to add more money to the pot and force weaker hands out of the game.

The highest hand wins the pot. A royal flush is 5 consecutive cards of the same suit. A straight is 5 cards in sequence but from different suits. A full house is 3 matching cards of one rank and two matching cards of another rank, and a pair is 2 unmatched cards of the same rank.

Some players like to play it safe and only call or raise when they have a good hand, but this strategy is often exploited by opponents. In addition, by playing it safe, you miss opportunities where a moderate amount of risk could yield a big reward.
